Bridesmaid dress - work in progress

As promised, here's a sneaky preview of my second attempt at Butterick 5457.

Following all the troubles that I had with my first version, and of course all your extremely helpful comments, I think my new version is turning out just as I imagined it. So here are a couple of pictures:

Here's my to-do list to finish it off:

  • Add a waist stay;
  • Insert a handpicked zipper (great suggestion by a few of you - thank you!)
  • Hand stitch the bodice lining to skirt lining/seam allowance;
  • Hand stitch the bodice lining at back opening to zipper;
  • Overcast any open seams;
  • Hem;
  • Remove chalk marks (I used a yellow tailor's chalk on the lilac bodice where the pleats are - they don't appear to come off easily! Any suggestions/ideas would be much appreciated!)

  1. Wow, that is going to be stunning! Sadly, I have no tips for cleaning the chalk out of your dress, unless you have the sewing machine attachments for your vaccuum (lower suction that way), but otherwise no good ideas. Hope you get it figured out though!

  2. I also have no tips for the chalk, but I feel your pain. I had to remove a million little fuzzies from the dark green embroidery thread I used to baste the pleats in my version...yuck :( Looking fabulous!!

  3. That is looking amazing! Wow! Seriously, Wow!
    Umm, chalk... I'd try vacuuming or getting a stiff paint brush and try and brush it out? Maybe spot cleaning if it won't leave water marks?

    1. Thank you Vicki - I tested spot cleaning with a bit of scrap - and it seems to leave no water marks... so this is my best plan yet! thank you for your suggestion :)

  4. try this - put a piece of scotch tape over the chalk mark and give a few rubs, then peel off.
